In a flight of 600 km, an aircraft was slowed down due to bad weather. Its average speed for the trip was reduced by 200 km/hr and the time of flight increased by 30 minutes. The duration of the flight is:
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Let the duration of the flight be x hours.
Then, | 600 | - | 600 | = 200 |
x | x + (1/2) |
![]() |
600 | - | 1200 | = 200 |
x | 2x + 1 |
x(2x + 1) = 3
2x2 + x - 3 = 0
(2x + 3)(x - 1) = 0
x = 1 hr. [neglecting the -ve value of x]

Suppose,
Duration = x hour.
600-200 = 400,
ATq,
x/400 - x/600 = 1/2,
2x = 1200,
x = 600,
So,
duration = 600/600 = 1 hour.
Duration = x hour.
600-200 = 400,
ATq,
x/400 - x/600 = 1/2,
2x = 1200,
x = 600,
So,
duration = 600/600 = 1 hour.

@Kiran
your answer is right only. But can you briefly explain how to find the value X from 2x2 + x - 3 = 0.

Yesh, I understood till,
(600/x) - (1200/(2x+1)) = 200.
Please, can anybody simplify this, only let me know, please.

Generally time taken to travel 600 km with 200 kmph will take 3 hr journey but how the time of flight will be 1 hr.

Simple method.
200 km......> 30 min (30/60 h).
Then 600......> ?
Therefore 600*30/60 = x*200.
x = 60 min.
200 km......> 30 min (30/60 h).
Then 600......> ?
Therefore 600*30/60 = x*200.
x = 60 min.

S inversely proportional to time;
Time increases flight speed decreases
T1s1=T2S2
X*600=(x+30)400
6x=4x+120
X=60.
Time increases flight speed decreases
T1s1=T2S2
X*600=(x+30)400
6x=4x+120
X=60.

600(2x+1)-1200x=200x(2x+1).
1200x+600-1200x=400x^2+200x.
600=400x^2+200x,
300=200x^2+100,
3=2x^2+x,
2x^2+x-3=0.
1200x+600-1200x=400x^2+200x.
600=400x^2+200x,
300=200x^2+100,
3=2x^2+x,
2x^2+x-3=0.

The distance is same in both cases and let time in case 1 be t.
Then 600 t = 400 (t+30/60).
Thus t = 1 hr.
Then 600 t = 400 (t+30/60).
Thus t = 1 hr.

@saravanakgopi.
What he said is wrong. Because he didn't convert hr into min. So that his method is wrong.
