Aptitude - Time and Distance - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Time and Distance - General Questions (Q.No. 2)
2.
An aeroplane covers a certain distance at a speed of 240 kmph in 5 hours. To cover the same distance in 1 hours, it must travel at a speed of:
300 kmph
360 kmph
600 kmph
720 kmph
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Distance = (240 x 5) = 1200 km.

Speed = Distance/Time

Speed = 1200/(5/3) km/hr.     [We can write 1 hours as 5/3 hours]

Required speed = 1200 x 3 km/hr = 720 km/hr.

1 2/3 is a mixed fraction, it has to be converted into an improper fraction

The formula to convert mixed fraction to improper fraction is Quotient * divisor + remainder/divisor.

In the above mixed fraction quotient=1, remainder= 2, divisor=3.

Therefore 1 * 3 + 2/3 = 5/3.

1(2/3)= 100 mins (1hr = 60, (2/3) = 60×2/3= 40 , 60+40=100 mins).
5hr = 300 mins.
So, 300/100 = 3 (to cover the distance).
5hr = 240.
Therefore, 240 × 3 = 720.

Given data:

Speed = 240km/hr.
t = 5hr.

By the way, to cover the same distance in another time t1 = 5/3.
Speed = distance/time.
dis = speed * time
dis = 240 * 5
dis = 1200km.
Speed = dis/time.
Speed = 1200/(5/3).
Speed = 3600/5 = 720km/hr.

So many people is asking 1 2/3 becomes 5/3.
Here is the explanation.
1 2/3 is a mixed fraction so we converted it into an improper fraction.
1 2/3 3 comes to the left side, so it becomes.
1*3 +2/3 = 5/3.

Speed 1=240kmph, time1 = 5hr.
Speed2=x. Time2=5/3.

S1/S2 = T2/T1,
S2 = (240*5)/(5/3),
S2 = 240*3,
S2 = 720kmph.
