If x = 3 + 1 and y = 3 - 1 , then the value of (x2 + y2) is:
3 - 1 3 + 1
10
13
14
15
Answer: Option
Explanation:

x = (3 + 1) x (3 + 1) = (3 + 1)2 = 3 + 1 + 23 = 2 + 3.
(3 - 1) (3 + 1) (3 - 1) 2

y = (3 - 1) x (3 - 1) = (3 - 1)2 = 3 + 1 - 23 = 2 - 3.
(3 + 1) (3 - 1) (3 - 1) 2

x2 + y2 = (2 + 3)2 + (2 - 3)2

   = 2(4 + 3)

   = 14

Since (x+y)^2-2xy = x^2+y^2.

x+y = 4, 2xy = 1.

Therefore, x^2+y^2 = 14.

Rationalizing the denominator. Makes it very easy and find xy.
