In a mixture 60 litres, the ratio of milk and water 2 : 1. If this ratio is to be 1 : 2, then the quantity of water to be further added is:
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Quantity of milk = | ![]() |
60 x | 2 | ![]() |
3 |
Quantity of water in it = (60- 40) litres = 20 litres.
New ratio = 1 : 2
Let quantity of water to be added further be x litres.
Then, milk : water = | ![]() |
40 | ![]() |
. |
20 + x |
Now, | ![]() |
40 | ![]() |
= | 1 |
20 + x | 2 |
20 + x = 80
x = 60.
Quantity of water to be added = 60 litres.

2x+x=60 => x=20,
So Milk=40L and Water=20L ,
Now to make 1:2 i.e. Milk=x and Water=2x.
We already have Milk=40L and we can take it as x=40 and Water as 2x=2*40=80L.
So, Water to be added is 80-20=60L (ans).
So Milk=40L and Water=20L ,

Simple formula is X(ad-bc)/c(a+b).
Applying this.
60(4-1)/1(2+1),
60*3/3= 60 ltr.
Applying this.
60(4-1)/1(2+1),
60*3/3= 60 ltr.

We have 60 liters of the mixture with help of milk and water which means,
2x+1x=60.
3x=60x=20.
Now put the value of x in 2x and 1x. We get 40and20.
And question says that some quantity is further added to Water let take x. So.
40 (milk) /20 (water) +x=1/2.
40/20+x=1/2=>80=20+x.
X=60. Hence proved.
2x+1x=60.
3x=60x=20.
Now put the value of x in 2x and 1x. We get 40and20.
And question says that some quantity is further added to Water let take x. So.
40 (milk) /20 (water) +x=1/2.
40/20+x=1/2=>80=20+x.
X=60. Hence proved.

You are right @Ramesh.
But they didn't mention that the 2nd statement 1:2 Is related to the 1st statement, then how you are relating?

@ALL.
The initial ratio 2:1 and after that 1:2 its only possible when the same amount of liquid is added in the mixture. That's it.

Just make it simple.
If the quantity of milk remains same 40.
And the new ratio is 1:2.
It means water is double then milk according to ratio then we have 40:80. And, minus the old water means 80-20 = 60.
