In a mixture 60 litres, the ratio of milk and water 2 : 1. If this ratio is to be 1 : 2, then the quantity of water to be further added is:
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Quantity of milk = | ![]() |
60 x | 2 | ![]() |
3 |
Quantity of water in it = (60- 40) litres = 20 litres.
New ratio = 1 : 2
Let quantity of water to be added further be x litres.
Then, milk : water = | ![]() |
40 | ![]() |
. |
20 + x |
Now, | ![]() |
40 | ![]() |
= | 1 |
20 + x | 2 |
20 + x = 80
x = 60.
Quantity of water to be added = 60 litres.

Hey guys, I am going to ask one question. The question is here;
In a city, 40% of the adults are illiterate while 85% of the children are literate. If the ratio of the adults to that of the children is 2:3, then what percent of the population is literate?

I DON UNDERSTAND..IN 2:1 RATIO MILK IS 40L AND WATER IS 20L..IN 1:2 RATIO,YOU CAN JUST SAY AS MILK 20L AND WATER 40L NO?IF SO,THE WATER THAT IS TO BE ADDED FURTHER FROM THE PREVIOUS MIXTURE TO MAKE IT TO 40L IS JUST 20L NO..?WHY TO DO SUCH CALCULATIONS??

@All.
Simply the solution is;
Mixture = 60 litre.
The ratio is 2: 1 , so milk:water=40:20.
New ratio= 1: 2 , means milk : water should be 40:80.
Water in the new mixture should be 80.
Less water already in the mix 20.
Water to be added now is 60.

Take it a simple way:
60 litre mixture
2:1 is the ratio means
Mixture is divided into 2+1 = 3 parts i.e, 30lt *3 = 60lt
Given 2:1 = milk: water = 40: 20
Now to make it 1:2
When 40:80=1:2
So, 80-20=60 lt water is added to bring out the ratio.

The simple trick is;
60litres mixture ratio 2:1 then 40:20.
In question, water is added to the mixture so milk quantity doesn't change. New ratio 1:2 milk same i.e 40 then 2*40= 80 (water ratio 2) old is 40:20 new is 40:80 (80-20)= 60ans.

Its very simple one drum of sixty litter quantity only;
1 . 2:1 that means 40 : 20 -40 milk and 20 water
2. 1:2 that mean 20:40-20milk and 40 water.
If we add both 60 kg water, further we want to it be 0:3 only 60 litter water.

The answer is simple, when the ratio is 2:1 than quantity is 40 liters:20 liters and when it has to be made 1:2, then at 60 liter water. So the quantity of milk remains 40 liters and water is increases to 80 liters.

2x+x=60 => x=20,
So Milk=40L and Water=20L ,
Now to make 1:2 i.e. Milk=x and Water=2x.
We already have Milk=40L and we can take it as x=40 and Water as 2x=2*40=80L.
So, Water to be added is 80-20=60L (ans).
So Milk=40L and Water=20L ,
Now to make 1:2 i.e. Milk=x and Water=2x.
