In a mixture 60 litres, the ratio of milk and water 2 : 1. If this ratio is to be 1 : 2, then the quantity of water to be further added is:
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Quantity of milk = | ![]() |
60 x | 2 | ![]() |
3 |
Quantity of water in it = (60- 40) litres = 20 litres.
New ratio = 1 : 2
Let quantity of water to be added further be x litres.
Then, milk : water = | ![]() |
40 | ![]() |
. |
20 + x |
Now, | ![]() |
40 | ![]() |
= | 1 |
20 + x | 2 |
20 + x = 80
x = 60.
Quantity of water to be added = 60 litres.

40/20+x = 1/2.
Cross multiple;
80 = 20 + x.
x = 60.
Cross multiple;
80 = 20 + x.
x = 60.

First, the ratio is 2:1 is 40: 20,
New ratio is 1: 2 is 20:40.
We want the water so we can add water such that 20+40=60.
New ratio is 1: 2 is 20:40.
We want the water so we can add water such that 20+40=60.

In 2:1 ratio milk +water=40 + 20 = 60 then,
In 1:2 ratio milk+water=20 + 40 = 60 now only total of water from both ratio is 60.
In 1:2 ratio milk+water=20 + 40 = 60 now only total of water from both ratio is 60.

1+2 = 3.
60/3 = 20.
Water value is change,
But milk remains the same so,
2:1
(1:2)*2= 2:4.
Change in water 4-1 = 3.
Hence,
3*20 = 60.
60/3 = 20.
Water value is change,
But milk remains the same so,
2:1
(1:2)*2= 2:4.
Change in water 4-1 = 3.
Hence,
3*20 = 60.

Milk 2x:1x water.
Previously 2x+1x=60 litres.
3x=60L.
x=60/3=20litrs.
Previously values = milk - > 2*x=40L.
Water->1*x=20L.
Quantity to be further added in water=x.
40/20+x=1/2.
X=60 L.

Initially we have 60lt in the ratio 2:1.
i.e: 40lt milk & 20lt water.
Think logically,
Our condition is to make the ratio as 1:2.
i.e: 40lt milk & 80lt water.
Then 40 : 80 it will become 1:2.
So, the required amount of water will be 80 - 20 (i.e: final quantity - initial quantity -> then we can get req amount of water to make the ratio as 1:2).
