Two numbers are respectively 20% and 50% more than a third number. The ratio of the two numbers is:
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Let the third number be x.
| Then, first number = 120% of x = | 120x | = | 6x |
| 100 | 5 |
| Second number = 150% of x = | 150x | = | 3x |
| 100 | 2 |
Ratio of first two numbers = |
![]() |
6x | : | 3x | ![]() |
= 12x : 15x = 4 : 5. |
| 5 | 2 |

Let x first number is 100 , 20% is more i.e; 120.
Let y second number is 100, 50% is more i.e; 150.
So, 120 : 150 is 4 : 5.
Let y second number is 100, 50% is more i.e; 150.
So, 120 : 150 is 4 : 5.

Here third nbr 100 say.
20%,50%is more than 100 respectively.
then;
120 %, 150%, 100%.
120 : 150 : 100.
120 : 150.
4 : 5.
20%,50%is more than 100 respectively.
then;
120 %, 150%, 100%.
120 : 150 : 100.

OPTION:C.
Let the third number be x.
20%x = 0.2x (and the number is more than a third of the number that is x) then,
=>x+0.2x = 1.2x,
50%x = 0.5x,
=>x+0.5x = 1.5x.
12:15=>4:5

Let the *third number = x*.
Then:
* First number is **20% more than x*
(x + 20%x = x + 0.2x = 1.2x)
* Second number is **50% more than x*
(x + 50%x = x + 0.5x = 1.5x)
So the two numbers are:
1.2x and 1.5x.
Now find the ratio: [1.2x : 1.5x]
Cancel x: [1.2 : 1.5]
Multiply both by *10* to remove decimals:
[12 : 15]
Divide by 3: [4 : 5].

Let a, b, c.
Let c = 100.
a = 120.
b = 150.
So, a: b = 4: 5.

Hi! It doesn't make a difference whether we use 20% of x + x or 50% of x + x, right?
And do we apply the method of cross-multiplication while solving for 6/5 : 3/2?
Please explain.
