Salaries of Ravi and Sumit are in the ratio 2 : 3. If the salary of each is increased by Rs. 4000, the new ratio becomes 40 : 57. What is Sumit's salary?
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Let the original salaries of Ravi and Sumit be Rs. 2x and Rs. 3x respectively.
Then, | 2x + 4000 | = | 40 |
3x + 4000 | 57 |
57(2x + 4000) = 40(3x + 4000)
6x = 68,000
3x = 34,000
Sumit's present salary = (3x + 4000) = Rs.(34000 + 4000) = Rs. 38,000.

The question demands Sumit's real salary. Not the increased one.
It clearly says " If the salary is increased" This means the answer has to be 34000. Isn't it?

Hello Everyone, can anyone please make me understand that.
If Sumit salary is 34000, then which must as the multiple of 3?
That means it must be something like as : 3x=34000.

R:S = 2x : 3x.
40:57cross {57*2:40*3} = 114:120.
(120-114)=6,
4000:4000cross{40*4000:57*4000} = 228000-160000 = 68000/6,
=11333.33333 * 3 = 34000 + 4000 = 38000.
40:57cross {57*2:40*3} = 114:120.

@Basu.
Here;
6 represents the difference 4000.
Therefore 4000 ÷ 6*57=38000.

The original ratio of their salaries are 2:3 and they are increased by 4000 the new ratio is 40:57.
Let their salaries be 2x ,3x.
2x+4000:3x+4000 = 40 :57,
114x +228000 =120x +160000,
6x =68000,
3x =34000 sumits original salary is 34000,
And after increase his salary =34000 + 4000= 38000.
