Salaries of Ravi and Sumit are in the ratio 2 : 3. If the salary of each is increased by Rs. 4000, the new ratio becomes 40 : 57. What is Sumit's salary?
Rs. 17,000
Rs. 20,000
Rs. 25,500
Rs. 38,000
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let the original salaries of Ravi and Sumit be Rs. 2x and Rs. 3x respectively.

Then, 2x + 4000 = 40
3x + 4000 57

57(2x + 4000) = 40(3x + 4000)

6x = 68,000

3x = 34,000

Sumit's present salary = (3x + 4000) = Rs.(34000 + 4000) = Rs. 38,000.

(57*2 - 40*3 = 6).

Original Ratio: 2:3.

New ratio: 40:57.

(40 - 57 = 17).

Previous salary of summit = 4000*3*17/6 = 34,000.

After increasing 4000 summit salary = 34,000+4000 = 38,000.

I hope it take less time to calculation.

The question is not what is sumit's new salary?
It is what is sumit's salary?

So, they didn't mention whether it is past or present.
So the answer could be 34000 or 38000.

Am I correct?
If not explain to me.

First ratio 2 : 3.
New ratio 40 : 57.
Increased in each 4000 4000.
Cross multiple each other.
40 × 3-57 × 2 = 57 × 4000-40 × 4000.
120 - 114 = 228000 - 160000
6 = 68000
1 = 666.

Sumit new 57×666. = 38000.

Let the salaries of ravi&sumith 2x,3x
each salary increased by 4000.
i.e ((2x+4000)/(3x+4000))->1
new ratio is 40:57->2
from 1 &2 we get
6x=68000
3x=34000
salary of sumith = 34000+4000=38000

From the beginning itself, the increased salary of both of them were added. i.e., 2x+4000/3x+4000.

My question is after finding the value of x, why they add again by 4000. Can you please clear it.

Shortcut:

The first difference of new ration is 17.

So, 34:51, 40:57,
Both ratio difference is 6.
6p=4000 than 51p=?
Answer is 34000. Now add given increased 4000.
So, 34000 + 4000 = 38000.

This is simple.

New increment in salary led to the new ratio.

You cannot add ratio (2,3) to value (4000) hence effect the change in ratio by multiplying by x factor.

Thus, 2x+4000... etc

The Salaries of Yasmeen and Adnan are in the ratio 1 : 2. If the salary of each is increased by Rs. 3000, the new ratio becomes 40 : 57. What is Adnan's present salary? Please solve this.

2X + 4000/3X + 4000 = 40/57.
114X + 228000 = 120X + 160000.
120X - 114X = 228000 - 160000.
6X = 68000.

So, both are divided by 2.
3X = 34000.
Put the value of 3X.
34000 + 4000 = 38000.

Sumit ratio is 3x.

His salary increased by 4000. So current salary is 3x+4000->equation 1.

We found out 3x=34000.

So substitute 3x=34000 in equation 1. So 34000+4000=38000.
