Discussion :: Ratio and Proportion - General Questions (Q.No.11)

11.

The salaries A, B, C are in the ratio 2 : 3 : 5. If the increments of 15%, 10% and 20% are allowed respectively in their salaries, then what will be new ratio of their salaries?

[A]. 3 : 3 : 10
[B]. 10 : 11 : 20
[C]. 23 : 33 : 60
[D]. Cannot be determined

Answer: Option C

Explanation:

Let A = 2k, B = 3k and C = 5k.

A's new salary = 115 of 2k = 115 x 2k = 23k
100 100 10

B's new salary = 110 of 3k = 110 x 3k = 33k
100 100 10

C's new salary = 120 of 5k = 120 x 5k = 6k
100 100

New ratio 23k : 33k : 6k = 23 : 33 : 60
10 10

Why is that the amount of % is written as 115 instead of 15 ?

Manikandan S said: (Jun 19, 2010)
Why we have to use K there and how 15% is changed to 115?

Anurag said: (Oct 11, 2010)
@Mankandan :

We can also use x instead of k.

15% is changed to 115 it is a shortcut method to avoid long caluclation.

Rama said: (Dec 9, 2010)
15% increase in salary = (100+15)% of 2k = (115/100)*2k.

Sumya said: (Jan 27, 2011)
@rama is very much right as here salary is increase from 100 to 115.

Rachana said: (May 25, 2011)
What is this k stands for ?

Prabhu said: (Jun 16, 2011)
Here k denotes the common multiplication number in all the 3 given ratio.

Boomadevi said: (Sep 15, 2011)
Why add this value 100+15?

Preety said: (Oct 2, 2011)
We can do like

15% of 2= 15/100*2=3/10 total value=2+3/10=23/10
10% of 3= 10/100*3=3/10 total value=3+3/10=33/10
20% of 5= 20/100*5=1 total value=5+1=6

New proportion is
23/10:33/10:6
or 23:33:60 ans.

Vijay Raja said: (Oct 15, 2011)
115 is taken because
A'Value has increased by 15%.
Now we can find new salary of A in two ways:

1st way:
THEORY:Step 1: Calculating 15% in original salary ( i.e 2k)
Step 2: And then adding it to the original value to get increased salary.
Calculation:Step 1: (15/100)*2k= 3k/10
Step 2: (3k/10)+2k=23k/10

2nd way:
THEORY: If we consider 100% is the original value.
15% is increased
therefore 100%+15%=115%
115% of 2k gives 15% increased salary + original salary

NOTE:here we need only one step to calculate new salary.
CALCULATION: (115/100)*2k=23k/10

New ratio of their salaries,

115*2=230.

110*3=330.

120*5=600.

i.e 230:330:600.

i.e 23:33:60.

Simplest way to understand.

15% increment in A Salary, So,
2*15% = 0.3.

Total Salary of A after increment = 2+0.3 = 2.3.

10% increment in B Salary, So,
3*10% = 0.3.

Total Salary of B after increment = 3+0.3 = 3.3.

20% Increment in C Salary, So,
5*20% = 1.

Total Salary of C after increment = 5+1 = 6.

Ratio of salary of A, B & C after increment.

2.3 : 3.3 : 6.0.

So 23 : 33 : 60 Answer.

Narayana Rao Gartam said: (Aug 18, 2014)
Let's salaries A,B,C are 200:300:500 i.e 2:3:5.

A-increase of 15% is 200+30 = 230.
B-increase of 10% is 300+33 = 330.

C-increase of 20%b is 500+100 = 600.
Ratio of A:B:C is 230: 330: 600.

i.e 23: 33: 60.

A man will b three times old in 20 years as he is now. What is his present age?

Narayana Rao Gartam said: (Feb 2, 2015)
Hai @Asma, Try below:

Ans, is 10 years.

Say, present age is = X,

After 20 years man age will be 3X = X+20.

i.e, 3X = X+20.

3X-X = 20.

X = 10.

Results, the man present age is 10 years.

I still don't understand why we have written 115?

Sourabh said: (Jul 18, 2015)
In this example mentioned 15% increase. That happened we are writing 115.

In case here mentioned loss/decrease 15% in this case we are write 85.

Let common multiple be x:

A = 15% of 2x+2x.

= 15/100*2x+2x.

= 3/10*x+2x.

= 3x/10+2x = {3x+10(2x)}/10 = 23x/10.

B = 10% of 3x+3x.

= 10/100*3x+3x.

= 3x/10+3x = {3x+10(3x)}/10 = 33x/10.

C = 20% of 5x+5x.

= 20/100*5x+5x.

= 1x/5*5x+5x = 1x+5x = 6x.

A:B:C = 23x/10:33x/10:6x.

= 23x/10:33x/10:6x*10/10 (L.C.M).

= 23x/10:33x/10: 60x/10.

= 23:33:60 (10 and x gets cancelled).

Hope I helped You guys!

Why you take 115/100 of 2k instead of 2k+15%? Please explain more in simplest form.

Raju Kollati said: (Jul 18, 2016)
110/100 = 1.1.
1.1 * 3 = 3.3.

Koushik Datta said: (Aug 30, 2016)
It can be solve in ay method:

2 * 115 : 3 * 11 : 5 * 120.
= 2 * 23 : 3 * 22 : 5 * 24.
= 23 : 33 : 60.

Satham said: (Mar 3, 2017)
20*115/100 = 23,
30*110/100 = 33,
20*120/100 = 60.

23 : 33 : 60.

@Abhinav Kumar.

Why the 10 and x gets cancelled in above question of Ratio and Proportion?

Bindhu said: (Feb 16, 2018)
Can anyone tell me how you can solve 23k/10 : 33k/10 : 6x into 23k : 33k :6k?

Please explain.

2*1.15, 3*1.1,5*1.2.
2.3, 3.3, 6
23, 33, 60.

Chandan Shil said: (Jul 14, 2018)
115*2/10=23,
110*3/10=33,
120*5/10=60.

So, 23:33:60.

How 23/10:33/10:6 = 23:33:60?

Venu said: (Aug 29, 2018)
115/100*20:110/100*30:120/100*50.
= 23:33:60.

Here 2=20 and 3=30 and 5=50.

Thanks for the answer @Preety.

Trimu said: (Dec 17, 2018)
@All.

A:B:C
2:3:5.

Increments are 15%, 10%, 20% Happen
So we have to find out their new salaries,
A= (2 * 0.15)=0.3 So add this in first ratio.
Then 2+0.3=2.3
Similarly B = (3 * 0.1)=0.3,
B = 3+0.3=3.3,
C =( 5 * 0.2)=1,
C = 5+1,
So the Ratios are now 2.3 : 3.3 : 6,
After multiplying with 100 in each;
= 23:33:60.
