16.
A train travelling at a speed of 75 mph enters a tunnel 31/2 miles long. The train is 1/4 mile long. How long does it take for the train to pass through the tunnel from the moment the front enters to the moment the rear emerges?
2.5 min
3 min
3.2 min
3.5 min
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Total distance covered
= ( 7 + 1 ( miles
2 4
= 15 miles.
4

Therefore Time taken
= ( 15 ( hrs
4 x 75
= 1 hrs
20
= ( 1 x 60 ( min.
20
= 3 min.

Why we not convert 75 kmph to m/sec?

Speed is given in meter/hr.

How come its taken with distance in miles and calculated (15/4)/75? How that possible different units?

Can any body explain, in the particular question my doubt is length is miles per hour and also unit of speed is also given in miles. Whether the length-speed or length-time is to be same unit of measurement to calculate the third?

I was thinking length-time-speed should be either Kilometer-hour-Kph or meter-seconds-meter per second.

How did you know that the time found was in terms of hours?

Question itself says, time from front of train enters to rear emerges.

So distance traveled should be 7/2 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 4.

@Geemee.

It already mentioned m=mile.

Time = Distance/Speed.

Time = (15/4)/75.

So how will it come like this 15/4*75?

Why you not change the miles into a meter?

Let me try to make this clear in 2 points.

#1. This question is same as train crossing the platform
#2. If we keep on reducing the size of tunnel till it reaches to size zero,i.e., the tunnel has now become a point so now we will calculate the time by using the length of the train only once. now when the size of the tunnel is added we can calculate time by Length of the train + Length of the tunnel / speed of the train.
