7.
Two trains of equal length are running on parallel lines in the same direction at 46 km/hr and 36 km/hr. The faster train passes the slower train in 36 seconds. The length of each train is:
50 m
72 m
80 m
82 m
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let the length of each train be x metres.

Then, distance covered = 2x metres.

Relative speed = (46 - 36) km/hr

   = 10 x 5 m/sec
18

   = 25 m/sec
9

2x = 25
36 9

2x = 100

x = 50.

The correct answer is 100 m. because the distance travel by faster train in 36 sec is 460 m
and distance travel by the slower train in 36 sec is 360 sec
so the answer is the difference of distance travel by the both train
(460-360)=100m
see practical example following
&&&&&&&& faster train
@@@@@@@@ smaller train
after 36 sec

|......460 m..&&&&&&|
|..360 m @@@@@@..|
so actual result is 100.

See.

Please read question once again, the faster train will overtake slower train in 36 seconds, both trains length are same, then sure faster and slower train are not in one position and also understand faster train is 36second behind the slower train.

When two bodies are moving in different speed may be opposite or same direction then the effective speed called relative speed..
assume one body moving x speed another y speed...then the relative speed like this,
relative speed = (x-y) when both body moving same direction
relative speed = (x+y) when both body moving opposite direction

...just like average buddy....

What is relative speed ? please explain.

Combine length of train.

1st train - 46000/3600 = 12. 777777778*36=460.

2nd train - 36000/3600 = 10*36=360.

There 460-360 = 100mts for 2 trains.

So each train is 50mts.

ANS : A.

The 2nd train has 36 sec, 1st train speed has 2 times of the slower train, so it is calculated as above ?

How will you subtract speeds. Because here speeds mentioned are the speeds of two different trains not the same train speeds.

Its not mention that trains are started at same point, then how can we solve the problem.

Swapan said:   1 decade ago
Please let me know where does the faster train start.
If the faster train starts behind the slower train the above solution is right otherwise it will be 100.

Let the train A started at the end of other train B. So, it has to first cover the whole length of the train B and to completely cross B it has to cover additional length of the train A. So, length=2*lenth of each train.
