A man is 24 years older than his son. In two years, his age will be twice the age of his son. The present age of his son is:
14 years
18 years
20 years
22 years
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let the son's present age be x years. Then, man's present age = (x + 24) years.

(x + 24) + 2 = 2(x + 2)

x + 26 = 2x + 4

x = 22.

Why we multiply 2 with sons age why not with fathers age because father age will be twice?

Vinitha said:   1 decade ago
No @Jeeva.
Son age is x.
Father age is x+24.

After 2 years,
Father's age = twice of his son's age.

So, (x+24) +2 = 2(x+2).
x+26 = 2x+4.
So, x = 22.

This is the required answer.

Keep smiling..

Hey I have one doubt, in question itself they given that father age is twice the age of son. So it will be like this only 2(24+x+2) = (x+2)?

Why it has been used in the solution? Can anyone explain me please?

@Lakshmi.

Man is 24 year older than his son.
Let sons age be X.

Dads age is 24 year older than his son so it is X+24.
Sons age = X.
Dads age = X+24.

After 2 years both father and sons age will be increased by 2.

X+2 = X+26

(Lakshmi here only you have got confused, fathers age is twice sons age means FATHER=2*SON, if sons age is twice the fathers age means your argument is correct, it will be SON=2*FATHER).

Since fathers age is twice the sons age its(X+26) = 2(X+2).

Hope you got it.

Hai friends.

x = x+24.

In two years x+2 = x+24+2.

In question, mentioned that the father age is twice of his son's age. then I think (x+26)2 = x+2.

Explain please?

@Deepak your method of doing is correct but you made 2nd equation wrong. it is after 2 years which means you should add 2 on both ages "x" and "y" and then make it twice as .

x+2= 2(y+2) solve it and you will get your answer.

@Deepak.

After 2 years means we have to had 2 for son's age also.

let M be the present age of man and S be the present age of son
now,
Man is 24 years older than his son....
M=24+S --(eq1)
After two years he will be twice his sons age...
M=2+2S --(eq2)

Solving simultaneously we get S=22.

What's wrong with This method....

Let x be present age of man and y be present age of son.
Now,
Man is 24 years older than his son.So,
x = y + 24......(1)

Again acc to Question after two years he will be twice his sons age
x+2 = 2y......(2)
Solving eq (1) and (2)
y = 26
