A man is 24 years older than his son. In two years, his age will be twice the age of his son. The present age of his son is:
14 years
18 years
20 years
22 years
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let the son's present age be x years. Then, man's present age = (x + 24) years.

(x + 24) + 2 = 2(x + 2)

x + 26 = 2x + 4

x = 22.

Son age x,
Father age x + 24,

(x + 24) = x -----------> equation 1.

After two year mean

[A]. 14 years + 2 = 16
[B]. 18 years + 2 = 20
[C]. 20 years + 2 = 22
[D]. 22 years + 2 = 24

Substitute [A].14 years + 2 = 16 in equation 1
(x + 24) = x
16 + 24 = 16
40 = 16 ( false ).

Substitute [B].18 years + 2 = 20 in equation 1.
(x + 24) = x
20 + 24 = 20
44 = 20 ( false ).

Substitute [C].20 years + 2 = 22 in equation 1.
(x + 24) = x
22 + 24 = 22
46 = 22 (false).

Substitute [D].22 years + 2=24 in equation 1.
(x + 24) = x
24 + 24 = 24
48 = 24
2[24] = 24 (true).

His age will be twice the age of his son.
So, the answer is Option D.

In this question the basic technique is to emphasise on son rather than on father as the whole question (see it carefully) revolves around the.

Age of the son.

So lets sons age be 'x'.

Now according to the condition.

Father's age will be 24+x.

And after 2 years hence (means after 2 years).

Father's age will become (24+x+2).

And sons age will become (x + 2).

Now fathers age is twice more than sons age.

To make lhs = rhs.

We will multiply 2 not with the current age of father but with the current age of son (important point).

So 2(x + 2) = 24 + x + 2.

So value of x = 22.

So sons age is '22'.

@Lakshmi.

Man is 24 year older than his son.
Let sons age be X.

Dads age is 24 year older than his son so it is X+24.
Sons age = X.
Dads age = X+24.

After 2 years both father and sons age will be increased by 2.

X+2 = X+26

(Lakshmi here only you have got confused, fathers age is twice sons age means FATHER=2*SON, if sons age is twice the fathers age means your argument is correct, it will be SON=2*FATHER).

Since fathers age is twice the sons age its(X+26) = 2(X+2).

Hope you got it.

GIVEN:a man is 24 yrs older thn his son
let us take sons age as x
thn fathers age will be 24+x
this can be written in equation form as 24+x=x ->equ 1
after 2yrs fathers age and sons age will be as
24+x+2=x+2 ->equ 2
GIVEN:after 2yrs fa age will b twice as sons age
therefore equ 2 becames as 24+x+2=2(x+2)
24+x+2=2x+4
26+x=2x+4
-> x=22

Let's son age =x
Father age= -+24
The ration between father and son is always equal,
X=x+24.

After 2 years;
Father age also increases and don age also,
X+2= x+24+2.

But we have one condition,
After 2 years father age is twice than son age,

So.

2(x+2)= x+24+2.

Simplify;
2x-x =24+2-4,
X=22,
X is son age =22.

According to the question
When son age is 1-year father is 24 years.
1:24

Now, when son age is 22.

Father age= 22+24=46 years.

@Maha.

Let the present age of son is x.

And as given in question the present age of father (f=24+x) and after 2 year later.

Father age = 2x.

In calculating the present age of son as given below as after 2 year.

24+x+2 = 2(x+2).
26+x = 2x+4.

So x = 22.

So because of x = present age of son, we have to add 2 year in present age of son and in this way we can calculate the value of x.

I hope you understand.

@ALL.

Let
x be fathers age,
y be sons age,
so,
present age,
equ (i)... ..
x=y+24,
after 2 yrs,
equ (ii)... ..
x+2=2(y+2) -------{by rewriting x= 2y+2},

Because 2 will be added in their present age i.e in x & y, and not in equ (i)
Then (x+2 fathers age) will be = 2 * (the age of son y+2).

then put value of x from equ (ii) in equ (i) to get y(sons age).
i.e y=22.

Hey it is very simple:

Age difference between father and son =24.
*( Age difference will be Same).
When the son reaches to age equals to difference means 24 then father's age will become double it happens after 2 years according to the question means;

Father age = 48.
Simply after 2 years,
Father =48, son =24.
We need the present age so subtract 2 from the above age;
Present age of F=46, S=22.

We got finally son's age as 22 year's,but in the problem they have mentioned only after two years father age will be twice as son's age so we have added 2 years both the side .. which is
(x + 24) + 2 = 2(x + 2)

So wen we get the answer we should subtract 2 years so tat we will be getting the present age ......... some body please clarify ma doubt ... :)
