Two tailors X and Y are paid a total of Rs. 550 per week by their employer. If X is paid 120 percent of the sum paid to Y, how much is Y paid per week?
Rs. 200
Rs. 250
Rs. 300
None of these
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let the sum paid to Y per week be Rs. z.

Then, z + 120% of z = 550.

z + 120 z = 550
100

11 z = 550
5

z = 550 x 5   = 250.

Given,
X=120/100 Y.
X=6/5 Y.

Now X+Y=550.
And 6/5 Y+Y=550.

11Y/5=550.
Y/5=50.
Y=250.

Hope you would find it more simple then other method.

Combined salary of X and Y is 550
:. X+Y=550
120% of Y+Y =550(as X is paid 120 percent of the sum paid to Y,
120/100Y+Y=550 so substitute X for 120%ofY)
12/10Y+Y=550
12Y+10Y=5500 (by taking l.c.m)
22Y=5500
Y=5500/22
Y=500/2
Y=250

@Vinoth.

This type of problems can be easily solved in the method posted by ramesh here we have to assume that y=100 and calculate the problem.

Let amount paid to Y = 100
then amount paid to x= 120% of 100 = 120
total paid i.e., x + y = 100 + 120 = 220
if total paid is 220, amount paid to y=100
if total paid is 550, how much is paid to 'Y"
100/220*550=250
