At what time between 4 and 5 o'clock will the hands of a watch point in opposite directions?
45 min. past 4
40 min. past 4
50 4 min. past 4
11
54 6 min. past 4
11
Answer: Option
Explanation:

At 4 o'clock, the hands of the watch are 20 min. spaces apart.

To be in opposite directions, they must be 30 min. spaces apart.

Minute hand will have to gain 50 min. spaces.

55 min. spaces are gained in 60 min.

50 min. spaces are gained in 60 x 50 min. or 54 6 min.
55 11

Required time = 54 6 min. past 4.
11

Hi frnds here this can be solve in another way also:

((5*hour)-30)(12/11) because it is straight line.

((5*4)-30)(12/11).

(-10)(12/11).

(50)(12/11).

54.(6/11).

Hi guy its very easy.

First of all at. 4 o' clock there is 120' space apart HM hand.

And for opposite direction there must be 180' space apart so,

Total is 300 space apart and the relative speed is 5.5 and the distance to Cover is 300. So, 300/5.5.

Hi @Nithya and @Ajit.

"At 4 o'clock, the hands of the watch are 20 min. Spaces apart.

To be in opposite directions, they must be 30 min. Spaces apart.

Minute hand will have to gain 50 min. Spaces".

Are you agree this statement? the same thing "to reach the 5 o'clock in the opposite direction, they must be 30mins. Space apart.

Minute hand will have to gain 55min. Spaces.

(1-2-3-...11) => (5+10+... 55).

So the answer is (60/55) *50 = 54.(6/11).

Is there any formula if the hands are apart my minutes?

Say eg., at what time between 5 and 6 o'clock the hands are 3 minutes apart?

@Nithya 55 min gained in 60 minutes means.

Suppose its 12:00 am (both the hands of clock have 0 min. difference between them,as they both point towards 12 )then after 60 min(1 hour) hour hand will point to 1, and minute hand will point to 12, now in this position minute hand and hour hand have a difference of 55 minutes between them.

Thats wat he is telling that minute hand gained 55 min in 60 min.

Where the 55 minutes comes from?

angle =11/2Min-30*Hours
so,180=11/2Min-30*4
180+120=11/2Min
min=300*2/11
Min=600/11

At what time between 5 'o' clock and 6 'o' clock, the hands of a clock will be 3 minutes apart.

At 4 o clock the hands are 20 minute apart.
to be just at opposite i.e at 180 degree opposite. the minute hand must travel 20+30 minute = 50 minute i.e at around 4:50.
thus in 50 minute minute hand travels= 50*6 degree= 300 degree
thus time taken to travel this distance= 300/(11/2)= 600/2 minute
