The length of a rectangular plot is 20 metres more than its breadth. If the cost of fencing the plot @ 26.50 per metre is Rs. 5300, what is the length of the plot in metres?
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Let breadth = x metres.
Then, length = (x + 20) metres.
Perimeter = | ![]() |
5300 | ![]() |
m = 200 m. |
26.50 |
2[(x + 20) + x] = 200
2x + 20 = 100
2x = 80
x = 40.
Hence, length = x + 20 = 60 m.

(4x-40) * 26.50 = 5300,
106x - 1060 = 5300,
106x = 5300+1060,
106x = 6360,

For those who are asking why perimeter.
As the question mentions fencing, and for fencing outer boundary is calculated i.e. perimeter.

106x = 5300+1060,
106x = 6360,

Calculate the perimeter by dividing 5300 by 23.50 then you can easily calculate breadth and then add 20 to breadth. Thats your answer.

Hi prash u r wrong... the mistake u done is in calculating perimeter.. It is 2[L+L-20]=2[2L-20] = 4L-40 meters
so,
[4L - 40]*26.50 = 5300
[4L - 40] = 5300 / 26.50 = 200
4L = 240
L = 240/4= 60 meters. small multiply mistake leads to diff solutions ... Be careful..

so,
[4L - 40]*26.50 = 5300
[4L - 40] = 5300 / 26.50 = 200
4L = 240
L = 240/4= 60 meters. small multiply mistake leads to diff solutions ... Be careful..

and perimeter = 2[L + L - 20] = [2L - 40] meters
[2L - 40]*26.50 = 5300
[2L - 40] = 5300 / 26.50 = 200

L = 120 meters
and perimeter = 2[L + L - 20] = [2L - 40] meters
[2L - 40]*26.50 = 5300
[2L - 40] = 5300 / 26.50 = 200
2L = 240
L = 120 meters
