A vessel is filled with liquid, 3 parts of which are water and 5 parts syrup. How much of the mixture must be drawn off and replaced with water so that the mixture may be half water and half syrup?

Explanation:
Suppose the vessel initially contains 8 litres of liquid.
Let x litres of this liquid be replaced with water.

We know that water is 3 part and syrup is 5 part.
So total amount of mixture must be multiple of 8,
If we take 40 lit mixture.
It must contain 15 lit water and 25 lit syrup.
Now we have to make it 1:1.
i.e-20 lit water and 20 lit syrup.
Now we have to draw 5 lit of syrup from the mix.
When we drew out 8 lit of mix then only it contains 5 lit syrup.
8 lit of water added to the mix makes water and syrup 1:1.
8 out of 40 is 1/5.
So total amount of mixture must be multiple of 8,
If we take 40 lit mixture.
It must contain 15 lit water and 25 lit syrup.
Now we have to make it 1:1.

We will remove 3x/18 from water and add x water [x is the qty of the liquid which was removed.]
So new water = 3/8 - 3x/8 + x
The same way we can say new syrup 5/8 - 5x/8,
So the equation will be
3/8 - 3x/8 + x = 5/8 - 5x/8,
(3 - 3x + 8x)/8 = (5-5x)/8,
3 + 5x = 5 - 5x,
10x = 2,
x = 1/5;
so 1/5 is the answer.

After adding water W:S=1:1
Since only water is adding Qty of Syrup will change.
W:S=3:5.
W:S=5:5.
Difference in water =2 part.
Total =(5+5)=10 part.
2/10=1/5 Ans.
