The diagrammatic representation, in my opinion, is wrong since its given that he ends up going in north direction, while in the figure, is shown east. So, if we move in reverse order, the answer is that he starts from going in north direction for 6kms.

Therefore, the answer is (A) - north.

Answer B is correct I think. You don't need to think that much complicated. Just follow the direction and finally you'll find that is south as the starting position and the ending position in the same line.
