Question: How many girls are taller than Shravan in his class ?
Statements:
- When students of Shravan's class are ranked in descending order of their heights, Shravan's rank is 17th from the top among all the students and 12th among boys.
- Shravan's rank from the bottom on the basis of height among boys is 18th and among all students, 29th.
Answer: Option
Explanation:
From I, we conclude that there are 16 students and 11 boys taller than Shravan.
This implies that there are 5 girls taller than Shravan.
In II, Shravan's rank from the bottom is mentioned and to ascertain the number of girls taller than him, we need to know his rank from the top for which the number of students in the class is required, which is not given.

Shravan's Rank is 17th so we need to focus on 16 students taller than him. There are 11 boys (taller) of the 16 students, besides him. Thus total girls are 16 - 11 = 5 (Shravan is the 12th guy, so excluding him). In the second case, we require total no of students in class.

2nd statement says rank according to the height from the bottom means clearly (29-18=11) or (28-17=11) there are 11 girls in the class taller than him, we don't need the remaining short heightened boys or girls, so answer must be C.

Why we need to know th total number of students when we need only difference to calculate?

How come there were only 16 students, if he is on 17th rank from the top?
