2nd statement says rank according to the height from the bottom means clearly (29-18=11) or (28-17=11) there are 11 girls in the class taller than him, we don't need the remaining short heightened boys or girls, so answer must be C.

Why we need to know th total number of students when we need only difference to calculate?

Shravan's Rank is 17th so we need to focus on 16 students taller than him. There are 11 boys (taller) of the 16 students, besides him. Thus total girls are 16 - 11 = 5 (Shravan is the 12th guy, so excluding him). In the second case, we require total no of students in class.

How come there were only 16 students, if he is on 17th rank from the top?
