Question: Who is to the immediate right of P among five persons P, Q, R, S and T facing North ?

Statements:

  1. R is third to the left of Q and P is second to the right of R.
  2. Q is to the immediate left of T who is second to the right of P.

I alone is sufficient while II alone is not sufficient
II alone is sufficient while I alone is not sufficient
Either I or II is sufficient
Neither I nor II is sufficient
Both I and II are sufficient
Answer: Option
Explanation:

From I, we have the order: R, -, P, Q.

From II, we have the order: P, Q, T.

Clearly, each one of the above two orders indicates that Q is to the immediate right of P.

From the first statement, below conclusion can be drawn:

R_PQ.
as the statement dictates R_ _Q and R_P.
Whereas from the second statement below are two possibilities:
PTQ or P_TQ.
As the statement dictates QT|TQ and P_T.

From the second statement - Q is to the immediate left of T who is second to the right of P. It is not clear whether is it Q or T who is second to the right of P. There is an ambiguity in the statement.

It is not necessary to consider the 2nd sentence as the letter immediate to the right of P can be found only using 1st statement.

How do you get P, Q, T from II, It should be P, -,Q, T because it is second to the write of P?

Both statements are required to find the answer. Hence, the answer should be E.

Dharani said:   4 years ago
The correct answer is E we need both statements to find the answer.
