23.
A monkey climbs 30 feet at the beginning of each hour and rests for a while when he slips back 20 feet before he again starts climbing in the beginning of the next hour. If he begins his ascent at 8.00 a.m., at what time will he first touch a flag at 120 feet from the ground?
4 p.m.
5 p.m.
6 p.m.
None of these
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Net ascent of the monkey in 1 hour = (30 - 20) feet = 10 feet.

So, the monkey ascends 90 feet in 9 hours i.e. till 5 p.m.

Clearly, in the next 1 hour i.e. till 6 p.m. the monkey ascends remaining 30 feet to touch the flag.

Distance to climb = 120 metres.

At once monkey climbs 30 metres in which he slips 10 metres.

Now net climb is 10 metres per hour.

Now when the monkey can climb 120 metres in 120/30 = 4 tries but each time he slips by 20 metres, therefore;

He slips 20 X 4 = 80 metres.

Now total distance that which monkey has to climb: 120+80 = 200 metre
Net speed: 10 metres per hour.

Total time = 200/10 = 10 hour.

8 am + 10 hours = 18 hours (6 pm).
It means 6 pm is the right answer.

Answer is right. That is after 90 feet only 30 feet will be remaining for getting 120 feet.

He reaches 90 feet @5 PM and he can travel 30 feet in 1 hour. So In the next hour i.e.@6 PM, he will reach exact 90+30= 120 ft and touch the flag and then after touching the flag he will slip down 30 feet so. 6 PM is the right answer.

None of this should be the correct answer.
Because effective climb is 10 feet /hour. In order to complete 120 feet, he needs Time = Distance /Rate; 120/10 which is 12 hours.

So he will complete the Distance of 120 feet by 8 pm.

H-d/a-d = 120-20/30-20 = 10 hrs.
