In a class of 60 students, the number of boys and girls participating in the annual sports is in the ratio 3 : 2 respectively. The number of girls not participating in the sports is 5 more than the number of boys not participating in the sports. If the number of boys participating in the sports is 15, then how many girls are there in the class ?
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Let the number of boys and girls participating in sports be 3x and 2x respectively.
Then, 3x = 15 or x = 5.
So, number of girls participating in sports = 2x = 10.
Number of students not participating in sports = 60 - (15 + 10) = 35.
Let number of boys not participating in sports be y.
Then, number of girls not participating in sports = (35 -y).
Therefore (35 - y) = y + 5 2y
30
y = 15.
So, number of girls not participating in sports = (35 - 15) = 20.
Hence, total number of girls in the class = (10 + 20) = 30.

Total no of students =60.
Participating boys and girls are in the ratio of = 3 : 2 = 3x:2x.
According to question, participating boys are 15 members so,by this we can say
3x = 15.
Where x=5 ---->(1)
We got x value then 2x=10----->(2).
In question they given the non participating girls 5 more than boys so let's assume the boys who are not participating as y---> (3) than the girls who are not participating as y+5--> (4)
Then total will come when we add participating boys+participating girls +non participating boys +non participating girls;
So we (1)+(2)+(3)+(4) = 60
15+10+y+y+5 = 60
30+2y = 60
2y = 60-30
2y = 30
Y = 30/2
Y = 15 we got non participating girls so to get total girls, participating girls +non participating girls.
15 + 15 = 30.

How can 3x+2x be equated to 15?
It must be equated to the total number of students participating.
It must be equated to the total number of students participating.

No. Of boys and girls participating in sports is 3:2. Boys participating in sport is 15 so, girls are 10. Total 25.
Remaining are non-sport. i.e . 35. In that question no. of girls participating in sports 5 more than no. of boys so. Boys 15. And girls 20.

@ Saravanan : The ratio is given to be 3:2, hence we cannot divide it equally into 30 boys and 30 girls.
@ Abhishek : No, we can't. It is given that 60 is the TOTAL number of students and 3:2 is the ratio of the students PARTICIPATING.

Can we divide 60 students into the ratio of 3:2 and them we solv ethe question accordingly??
Is it possible??

The above explanation is not correct as the correction will be done in 5th and 6th line were,
Let the no.of boys not participating in sports be (35-y) ,
Then, the no.of girls not participating in sports is (y+5).
After this correction is done then there will be no confusion.

The given explanation is more complicated one, just be logical.
As the ratio is 3:2.
First divide 60 as 30 boys and 30 girls.
Then apply the conditions, you will get the answer quickly.
