How "the stronger" is not an error. That article "the" should be placed in front of superlative degree. Strongest.

It should be the strongest in superlative comparison.

In case of comparative comparison, it will be stronger than, than is important here.

The Stronger is ok because The Team is not compared with other team and not with many teams. The Sentence emphasis more on Defeat than Comparison of teams.
