Option a is correct.

Because no need to use 'about' after discuss, also no need of so before thoroughly. Because its already so many times.

The correct is "we discussed the problem thoroughly".

"About", identifies a topic. In option A, "problem" is specific and does not denote a topic. Hence option A is correct. Option C is not concise but it is grammatically correct.

Can anyone tell why A is the answer?

The word "about" is no need in that sentence.

Answer is A because Discuss/describe/illustrate is never followed by "About".

I agree that it is not needed to use "so" before "thoroughly"... why is it so that should not use "about" when "discuss" comes?
