Obviously its right "how to play".
Muhammad Raees said: (Jun 19, 2011)
How to is a question and to play is normal word.........how it is false
Priya said: (Jul 4, 2011)
Why cant it be : do you know to play guitar?

We should remember that tests on English Language are generally designed to test the knowledge of written English and not the colloquial English. In written English the correct sentence is ----- Do you know how to play guitar? It is a different matter how you speak while talking to somebody.

Yeah but may i know about option-c since i feel that "Do u know how to play guitar?" makes better sense when compared to "do u know how to play the guitar?"
Dhairya Lakhera said: (Jan 9, 2012)
|"Do you know how to play the guitar?" is right...
i expect to get a prize.
//here "to get a prize" is noun phrase
i expect that i shall get a prize.
// here "that i shall get a prize" is noun clause.
Similarly "how to play" is noun clause and "to play" is a noun phrase which is replacing the noun clause.

Can't the "how" come with the option (A), the answer is ridiculous!!
Jaswinder said: (Sep 14, 2012)
It is a better sense do you know how to play to guitar?
Vishal said: (Jul 10, 2013)
I think it should be option (C) , because 'do you know to play guitar' makes more sense. Ultimately, it is the widely spoken style that should be accepted as correct usage going by Norman Lewis.
Kartikeya said: (Jul 12, 2013)
I think the problem here is because of "the". Definite article should be used when we refer to a specific object in the context already known. Since here, we are using in general sense, "the" should be dropped.
Akash Dwivedi said: (Sep 18, 2013)
|@ Dhairya Lakhera - Your point is valid and the correct answer should be option 'C' . In option B the Noun clause is replaced by a Noun phrase and it is perfectly fine.
Do you know English - correct
Do you know how to make out - correct
DO you know to count beans - correct
@ Kartikeya - Your point is logical except, for referring a general object we should use 'a'
The correct sentance should be:
1- Do you know how to play a guitar?
2- Do you know to play a guitar?
Hope this helps.

To play/ how to play A GUITAR.
Difference between written and spoken language. I think the correct answer should be C.
The above explanations given Dhairya and Akash make complete sense.
Tanvir said: (Aug 8, 2014)
It can also be 'Do you know to play guitar?'.
Amrendra said: (Nov 23, 2014)
I think C has not a punctually right because there is a question mark.
Akshay Baxi said: (Sep 26, 2015)
|I totally agree with @Akash and I think option C must be the correct answer here, as we are referring to a common/general object therefore must use 'a guitar' instead of 'the guitar'.
Hence the answer: Do you know to play a guitar?
Tapanjana said: (Jan 6, 2017)
Absolutely. C must be the correct option. We cannot play THE Guitar. We play Guitar. It is simply because we cannot know THE English, but we can know English. And I don't know what's the problem with PLAY (Option B).
Alive said: (Aug 30, 2017)
Considering the clause 'How to play. ' can simplify this. It has been promoted to the main clause from subordinate clause so the 'how', with a gut feeling, will better suit in that clause.
Saqib said: (Feb 3, 2018)
'The' should not be used and correct answer should be C.
Nikhil said: (Dec 7, 2019)
|First, Guitar is Noun so it's the first error.
Next, it will be how to play.
