Because auxiliary verb (now) in a clause cannot be separated from the main verb (rules) they should be close next to each other.

In my point of view,
eg: He is now free from his work.(mentioning the little time period that he is now only free).
Sheela solved all her problems so that she free now.(mentioning the long time period that she will be free hereafter).

Adverb is used after helping verb or modals.

According to me, now is an adverb and free is an adjective. If we use 'free now', free (which is an adjective) ends up modifying now (which is an adverb) , which is grammatically incorrect. An adjective can modify only a noun whereas an adverb can modify verbs, adjectives and adverbs.
Please correct me if I've missed something.

Second phrase is compared with the first one so otherwise I am free now is a correct sentence.

I think "the Indian" also wrong this one because vowel sounds are a, e, i, o, you then Indian "i" is there so we use "an".
