Why can't it be ''the best performer''?

Option E is correct as "the best of the performers" means "a best performer"; no difference in the meaning so, no need to change it.

E is correct we need to choose best from many performers.

So performer should be plural i.e., performers.

Best is a superlative degree of good. Good better best.

With the superlative degree there should be plural things to compare.

Why performers only performer will be sufficient?

Option A is not correct because 'a' best performer could be anyone. If it was 'the' best performer then it would have been correct.

So, E is correct.
