Best is a superlative degree of good. Good better best.
With the superlative degree there should be plural things to compare.

E is correct we need to choose best from many performers.
So performer should be plural i.e., performers.

Option E is correct as "the best of the performers" means "a best performer"; no difference in the meaning so, no need to change it.
