It's so simple. The sentence is with two phrases. In the first, the description given about the person negatively (unsmiling). After that there is a conjunction 'but'. So the sentence after the 'but' should be a positive thing about him. All the other options except A are negative sentences about him.

Every option seems to be reflecting the first half of the statement but the selection of the right answer depends on the description given by the statement.
In that I think the first option is more apt.

After the conjunction 'but' it should be a positive sentence because the answer reflects your positive attitude towards other person.

Unsmiling is a negative word and but it is used which implies that the next sentence about the person will tell its positive traits.

Here they are using the conjunction but which means connecting two opposite things. Hence we can clearly say the answer.
