Option A will reciprocate the first half of the sentence after using 'but'.

Every option seems to be reflecting the first half of the statement but the selection of the right answer depends on the description given by the statement.

In that I think the first option is more apt.

It's so simple. The sentence is with two phrases. In the first, the description given about the person negatively (unsmiling). After that there is a conjunction 'but'. So the sentence after the 'but' should be a positive thing about him. All the other options except A are negative sentences about him.
