well basically concealing means to hide....so it cannot be D,
and with context of the sentence you cannot use the word succeed so eliminate option C.
and again agony means pain...so if its B it contradicts the statement..and it obviously cant be A since it means happy and not angry...so its E :)

'Despite' creates a contrast, but the statement says he tried to conceal his anger, which means that even as he tried to, he still showed that he was angry.

So, Answer E is the correct answer.
