Because different width of lines have its own specific function which convey the meaning of line while we are reading the drawing. EG. The center line have a specified width with dotted formation so, we can identify the center line.

As per my thoughts, it describes the major of line type in which the hidden lines provided with a less line width so it gives light in visual when compared to other lines thus the operators can easily identify the difference in drawing.
