Simply put, the 3rd picture in each row is the equivalent of all the lines in the previous 2 pictures of the same row added together. However, whenever a line segment of the previous 2 pictures of the same row overlaps, said line gets "eliminated". The overlapping lines do not show up in the 3rd picture.

Look at it like, around black dot with short arms. If the short arm appears in the first two box positioned the same way, it does not make it to the third box. In this case, both arms are not positioned the same way in the two boxes, so they make it to the third.
