A short steel column is one whose slenderness ratio does not exceed 50; an intermediate length steel column has a slenderness ratio ranging from about 50 to 200, and are dominated by the strength limit of the material, while a long steel column may be assumed to have a slenderness ratio greater than 200 and its behavior is dominated by the modulus of elasticity of the material.

The answer depends on the material of the column. Generally, for structural steel, the column is considered to be 'short' for slenderness ratios (SR) < 40 , 'intermediate' for 40 < SR < 150 and 'long' when SR > 150. A short column fails in compression while a long column fails in buckling. The intermediate column falls between the two.

In RS KHURMI, he mentioned that ratio more den 80 is called Long columns and less den 80 is called Short Columns but he didn't mention about Medium columns.
If we go through theory books,
there they categorized less 32--short.
32-120--medium.
More than 120--long columns.

There are many variations in answers in different books but generally, S.R.<30(Short columns), S.R.- 30 TO 120 (Medium columns), & S.R.>120 (Long columns), so medium column should be correct Answer.

For steel if slenderness ratio > 80 then it is long column and then only Eulers formula can be applied. If slenderness ratio < 80 it is short column and Eulers formula can't be applied.

@Abhinav yadav said that for long column slenderness ratio more than 120 but question is if slenderness ratio for a column is 100 then answer would be a medium column. Is it yes or no.

Slenderness ratio for long column:- More than 120.
Slenderness ratio for Medium column:- Slenderness ratio lies between 32 to 120.
Slenderness ratio for short column:- Less than 32.
Slenderness ratio for Medium column:- Slenderness ratio lies between 32 to 120.
Slenderness ratio for short column:- Less than 32.

If the slenderness ratio of a column is lies between 32 to 120 than it is known as the medium column.
And S. R of a column is more than 120 than it is known as a long column.

Euler's formula holds good only for LONG COLUMNS.
And also applicable for a column having the Slenderness ratio > 80.
So, 100 > 80. I.e., the answer is a long column.
And also applicable for a column having the Slenderness ratio > 80.
So, 100 > 80. I.e., the answer is a long column.
