The answer is correct. Actually, when the bar is held at -5 degrees. Temp than it's material tends to shrink but the molecule will resist this deformation and hence apply a tensile stress (stress in opposite direction of the shrink).

If it is constrained, when we cool the bar it tends to shrink which develops tensile stress inside the bar.
Similarly, when we heat the bar it tends to expand and due to constraint compressive stresses are developed.

When the temp decreases, the material is prevented from contracting. Therefore tensile stresses are induced.
The question does NOT ask which stress is being applied. Its asking what stresses will the bar develope !

As on applying heat there is no stress will induced likewise on cooling too no stress is developed. Because until we apply any external forces on bar there is no tensile, compressive or shear stresses induced.

Ya in view compressive stress is correct if you place bread in freezer in -5 temp it will shrink same when you place a iron bar in freeze the molecules in the iron will able expand it will undergo shrinkage.

Stress is the force of resistance per unit area, offered by a body against deformation.
Here the bar is cooled, so it will try to contract. So tensile stress will develop in the bar to resist deformation.

Tensile stress will be induced when bar get cooled its starts shrinking. As a result, It like a compressive load acting on it, for resisting this internal resistance is developed which is tensile stress.

Due to cooling inter molecules try to shrinking while it makes body to compress but to resist this compressive forces internally tensile forces develops in a body.
Now you got dear friends?
Thank you.

In thermal analasys of stress if there is no restriction of strain no stresses are produced, in the given question they said that bar is cooled the bar is not in equbrlium then stress produced is zero.

When the bar is cooled, it will contract. This contraction is prevented by the fixed ends which develops tensile stress in the bar. If it is free to contract, then there is no stress developed.
