Because Deformation means change in dimension so the ratio of change in dimension to original dimension is called strain. Here dimension is length so deformation means change in length over original length.

There is only one reason to choose strain is its dimension.
Otherwise, we can't use dL/L as it's explanation, Because here it is written unit length also not told unit length is one.

Strain: It is the ratio of change in length to the original length.
Original length is "l"
Change in length is "dl"
Strain = l/dl.
Original length is "l"
Change in length is "dl"
Strain = l/dl.

Strain is defined as a change in dimensions to the original dimensions.
So, deformation per unit length is known as strain.
So, deformation per unit length is known as strain.

Deformation to unit length is a dimensionless parameter since strain is a dimensionless parameter. So it is the answer.

dL\L IS RATIO.
Where DL is change in length L is the original length.
Where DL is change in length L is the original length.

Strain = dL/L, dL = difference of length, L = original length.
