Original length is "l"

Change in length is "dl"

Strain = l/dl.

Because Deformation means change in dimension so the ratio of change in dimension to original dimension is called strain. Here dimension is length so deformation means change in length over original length.

Deformation to unit length is a dimensionless parameter since strain is a dimensionless parameter. So it is the answer.
