Toughness is the property of material which enables it to absorb energy without fracture. It is represent by area under stress-strain curve up to fracture. BEND test used for common comparative test for toughness.

Shock resisting steel means it can withstand Impact Loading on it. To withstand Impact Loading its Toughness must be high.

Strain energy = 1/2(stress*strain*volume).
