Toughness is the property of material which enables it to absorb energy without fracture. It is represent by area under stress-strain curve up to fracture. BEND test used for common comparative test for toughness.

Shock resisting steel means it can withstand Impact Loading on it. To withstand Impact Loading its Toughness must be high.

Important property of shock resistant steel is toughness it is defined as the energy absorbed per unit volume.

Toughness is the area under stress strain curve or it is the energy absorb or stored upto fracture fracture.

Toughness is defined as the strain energy per unit volume.

Strain energy = 1/2(stress*strain*volume).
