All metals exist in the form of oxides, carbonates, sulphides etc. Except Nobel gasses all elements have en-paired electrons in their valency shell, by that this are unstable. To stabilize or reduce the free energy all elements react with other elements and forms oxides, carbonates, sulphides etc by depending on their valency.

If iron is in the form of +2 state it react with oxygen and sulphur and form fe2o3 or fe3o4 and fes2. By depending on it valency it react with other elements.
