Logical Reasoning - Statement and Conclusion - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Statement and Conclusion - Section 1 (Q.No. 39)
Directions to Solve

In each question below is given a statement followed by two conclusions numbered I and II. You have to assume everything in the statement to be true, then consider the two conclusions together and decide which of them logically follows beyond a reasonable doubt from the information given in the statement.

Give answer:

  • (A) If only conclusion I follows
  • (B) If only conclusion II follows
  • (C) If either I or II follows
  • (D) If neither I nor II follows and
  • (E) If both I and II follow.

39.

Statements: Players who break various records in a fair way get special prizes. Player X broke the world record but was found to be under the influence of a prohibited drug.

Conclusions:

  1. X will get the special prize.
  2. X will not get the special prize.
Only conclusion I follows
Only conclusion II follows
Either I or II follows
Neither I nor II follows
Both I and II follow
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Clearly, X will not get the special prize because although he broke the world record, he was found to use unfair means. So, II follows while I does not.

What have I thought is that the drug abuse is irrelevant to his play performance?

The paragraph doesn't mention that the drug is for cheating in the game. It can be a video game player or racing car driver who has broken the record but also is a drug abuser. Then, in this case, should drug addiction should be counted? Why should we assume the record breaker is an athlete cheating by using drugs?

Anyone, please clarify this.

I agree with @Ishyggi.

What is with these questions, this is typical logic trickery of the mind, the whole point of these tests. They must have hired some intern with bad logic. They also don't seem to be updating their answers.

WRONG.

The statement tells what happens when one succeeds there is nothing said when one fails.

For B to be true the sentence would have to read "ONLY players who break various records in a FAIR way get special prices".

@Ishyggi but Player X did not fail, he succeeded, using drugs, but he succeeded breaking the record nonetheless.

Breaking a record results in 2 situations:

1) fair play -> get prize.

2) unfair play -> no prize.
