Logical Reasoning - Statement and Conclusion - Discussion
Discussion Forum : Statement and Conclusion - Section 1 (Q.No. 34)
Directions to Solve
In each question below is given a statement followed by two conclusions numbered I and II. You have to assume everything in the statement to be true, then consider the two conclusions together and decide which of them logically follows beyond a reasonable doubt from the information given in the statement.
Give answer:
- (A) If only conclusion I follows
- (B) If only conclusion II follows
- (C) If either I or II follows
- (D) If neither I nor II follows and
- (E) If both I and II follow.

Statements: To cultivate interest in reading, the school has made it compulsory from June this year for each student to read two books per week and submit a weekly report on the books.
Conclusions:
- Interest in reading can be created by force.
- Some students will eventually develop interest in reading.
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Clearly, the new scheme intends to develop interest in reading by incorporating the habit in their routine. So, only II follows while I does not.

You have to take the statement given as completely true and it says that it is compulsory for them to read 2 books in a week and that is done to cultivate interest in reading compulsory itself makes it a forceful mean. And if the statement is true then it implies that interest in reading can be cultivated by force.

Why not D?
Reading 2 books per week has been made mandatory but we can't say with absolute certainty that some may generate interest in reading. It is in fact possible, however minuscule, that all the students will be further repulsed from reading due to this forceful method.

"Some students will eventually develop an interest in reading", it is a response by students. The above can be assumed but cannot be concluded. i.e, on an assumption that the students will develop an interest in reading, the school has enforced reading two books per week.

The intention might be to generate interest. But the result of the exercise is unknown. We cannot deduce that interest has been generated in all or some students by this method. It is also possible that the interest is not generated. So D is the answer.

I think the answer should be D.
Generation interest by reading 2 books a week which is made compulsory will not make them like reading. And ofcourse I is out of question. So, it should be D.

Interest in reading can be created by force. ------this statement can be challenged or it is doubtful.
II conclusion is partial truth it can't be challenged.
II conclusion is partial truth it can't be challenged.

According to the statement, the word compulsory is used.
So conclusion, 1 follows And conclusion 2 also follows. So, the answer is option E.

Here mentioned the term "compulsory" means some may not like reading books eventually it is kind of force so option E may be correct.

Why not E because they are saying reading two books per week but how can you say develop interest in reading?

Reading the compulsory is also mean the force the students into reading. So E must be answer.
