Logical Reasoning - Statement and Conclusion - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Statement and Conclusion - Section 1 (Q.No. 37)
Directions to Solve

In each question below is given a statement followed by two conclusions numbered I and II. You have to assume everything in the statement to be true, then consider the two conclusions together and decide which of them logically follows beyond a reasonable doubt from the information given in the statement.

Give answer:

  • (A) If only conclusion I follows
  • (B) If only conclusion II follows
  • (C) If either I or II follows
  • (D) If neither I nor II follows and
  • (E) If both I and II follow.

37.

Statements: No country is absolutely self-dependent these days.

Conclusions:

  1. It is impossible to grow and produce all that a country needs.
  2. Countrymen in general have become lazy.
Only conclusion I follows
Only conclusion II follows
Either I or II follows
Neither I nor II follows
Both I and II follow
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Here, the statement says "absolutely self-dependent", that means to some extent countries still depend on other countries for their needs and this links with conclusion I. So, option A is correct.

It should be option D, because impossible word contradicts the given statement.

It should be D. A country can CHOOSE to be dependent on other countries as it may not always be economical to produce all the goods itself. (They may import oil because the cost of domestic production is higher, but this doesn't mean it's impossible).

It should be D since conclusion 1 says that it is never possible to grow and produce all that a country needs, while statement says about these days.

Even I feel it is D. Statement I does not logically follow. In fact, the 'statement' follows directly from I.

So answer should be D.

Yes, I agree with you both.

It should be option D.

Here, option D should be right because impossible word weaken the conclusion.

As the reason is not mentioned in the statement it can be any of the reasons so the right option must be C.

I think it should be D.
