Logical Reasoning - Statement and Conclusion - Discussion
Discussion Forum : Statement and Conclusion - Section 1 (Q.No. 10)
Directions to Solve
In each question below is given a statement followed by two conclusions numbered I and II. You have to assume everything in the statement to be true, then consider the two conclusions together and decide which of them logically follows beyond a reasonable doubt from the information given in the statement.
Give answer:
- (A) If only conclusion I follows
- (B) If only conclusion II follows
- (C) If either I or II follows
- (D) If neither I nor II follows and
- (E) If both I and II follow.
10.
Statements: The distance of 900 km by road between Bombay and Jafra will be reduced to 280 km by sea. This will lead to a saving of Rs. 7.92 crores per annum on fuel.
Conclusions:
- Transportation by sea is cheaper than that by road.
- Fuel must be saved to the greatest extent
Answer: Option
Explanation:
According to the statement, sea transport is cheaper than road transport in the case of route from Bombay to Jafra, not in all the cases. So, conclusion I does not follow. The statement stresses on the saving of fuel. So, conclusion II follows.

If we can read the last paragraph which is this will lead to a saving of Rs 7.92 crores per annum on fuel. It means it talks about fuel not on the fare of transportation or involving money.

But we have to reach to conclusion only by given statements. We do not consider what is generally true or false in real life.
Therefore both should be true.

According to me, only 2 follows because they didn't mention any financial matters in road transport as compared to sea transport. So only 2 follows.

It should be either 1 and 2 because the question don't describe about a specific or normal case.

Note, here it is clearly mentioned that "The distance of 900 km by road between Bombay and Jafra will be reduced to 280 km by sea" but nowhere mentioned that it is cheaper than road transportation.
So, option B is the only correct answer.

Here in these questions, clearly, we can see that he talks about the saving of money not fuel. Then why option 2 is correct?

Conclusion 2: Not necessarily valid. While saving fuel is generally a good practice, the statement does not explicitly support the broad conclusion that fuel must be saved to the greatest extent. While it implies the importance of fuel conservation in this specific context, it doesn't mandate a general principle of saving fuel to the maximum extent in all situations.
So, according to me option D, Neither I nor II follows, should be the correct answer.

As I think, 1 is false since it's mentioned distance is going to be reduced and hence fuel and money will be saved, nowhere it is mentioned about the cost of transportation of sea or road travel, and 2 is true since advice related to the statement is always true.

There are some conclusions which does not directly follow but it may be indirectly applied or is one of the suggestive course of action. it is of the good things to be encouraged. Such conclusions are usually the right option.
For this case, the statement stresses saving money on fuel. So, option 2 is indirectly related and has a positive intent; thereby option 2.
