Directions to Solve

In each question below is given a statement followed by two assumptions numbered I and II. You have to consider the statement and the following assumptions and decide which of the assumptions is implicit in the statement.

Give answer

  • (A) If only assumption I is implicit
  • (B) If only assumption II is implicit
  • (C) If either I or II is implicit
  • (D) If neither I nor II is implicit
  • (E) If both I and II are implicit.

6.

Statement: In Bombay, railway trains are indispensable for people in the suburbs to reach their places of work on time.

Assumptions:

  1. Railway trains are the only mode of transport available in the suburbs of Bombay.
  2. Only railway trains run punctually.

Only assumption I is implicit
Only assumption II is implicit
Either I or II is implicit
Neither I nor II is implicit
Both I and II are implicit
Answer: Option
Explanation:
That the railway trains are indispensable for people to reach the place on time does not mean that there are no other means of transport but shows that trains alone run on time. So, I is not implicit and only II is implicit.

What bugs me of assumption 2 being considered implicit is the word "Only" - I do agree that it can be implied that railway trains run punctually, but this form of transportation being held as the ONLY one that can be punctual is a stretch.

Yes, I understand why assumption 1 is not implicit. But my question is about assumption 2. We also don't know from the statement that whether the trains run punctually or not. Please help with explanation.

Assumption 2 seems incorrect. The ONLY word does not justify because nowhere in parargraph compared railways with another mode of transport.

Please explain how is assumption 2 correct "only railways are punctual "makes it compulsive and assumption are certainly not compulsive.

Here in assumption 2 it is given clearly that only trains work punctually. I am not getting from where he drew that assumption.

Nowhere it is mentioned in the statement that the railway trains are the only mode to reach destinations on time.
