Directions to Solve

In each question below is given a statement followed by two assumptions numbered I and II. You have to consider the statement and the following assumptions and decide which of the assumptions is implicit in the statement.

Give answer

  • (A) If only assumption I is implicit
  • (B) If only assumption II is implicit
  • (C) If either I or II is implicit
  • (D) If neither I nor II is implicit
  • (E) If both I and II are implicit.

Statement: "If you trouble me, I will slap you." - A mother warns her child.

Assumptions:

  1. With the warning, the child may stop troubling her.
  2. All children are basically naughty.

Only assumption I is implicit
Only assumption II is implicit
Either I or II is implicit
Neither I nor II is implicit
Both I and II are implicit
Answer: Option
Explanation:
The mother warns her child with the expectation that he would stop troubling her. So, I is implicit. The general nature of children cannot be derived from the statement. So, II is not implicit.

Whenever you see the words all, every, each, none, nobody, only etc. The assumptions are not implicit. So, Assumption two is not implicit.

The "if" in the beginning describes a hypothetical situation and her response to it. It is A if the child already troubles her in general. But the answer is B if the child is not troubling her but she makes the statement because she believes that, due to the intrinsic naughtiness of children, hers will at one point begin to trouble her.

I think both are not implicit. Because both the assumptions given are conclusions. Here the conclusions should not be assumption.

There are fair chances that the children are not troubling her, but she give a warning for privation. So 1 is also not implicit.

The presence of IF shows that the act is yet to be committed but the mother is giving her child a warning beforehand so assumption 1 is invalid.

Either way we Cannot say All Children are Naughty! some are not, hence mother warns the child before he commits an action. And in I there is "MAY STOP" which means if the child is not naughty he will stop else may not.

Both of these options can be implicit because some children don't stop even in the case they are warned.

Assumption second is not implicit due to the basic reasoning. As far as the first assumption is concerned, they should have used "start" instead of "stop".

Thus logically, none is correct. :).
