Logical Reasoning - Statement and Assumption - Discussion
Discussion Forum : Statement and Assumption - Section 6 (Q.No. 17)
Directions to Solve
In each question below is given a statement followed by three assumptions numbered I, II and III. You have to consider the statement and the following assumptions, decide which of the assumptions is implicit in the statement and choose your answer accordingly.
17.
Statement: The address of the Principal to the students, "Dear students, if you want a healthy mind, listen to music."
Assumptions:
- Normally students like to follow good advice.
- It is desirable to develop a healthy mind.
- It is the duty of the Principal to advise the students.
Answer: Option
Explanation:
The Principal has advised the students regarding their welfare. This implies that students like to follow good advice. So, I is implicit. Since the Principal stresses on having 'a healthy mind', it implies that students desire for the same. So, II is implicit. However, the Principal has given the advice out of deep concern for his students and not because it is his duty. So, III is not implicit.

How can you tell if the advise was given as a matter of concern and not of duty?

I think it should be E because all are implicit. How can you say that the advice is given because of deep concern?
Principle always gives advice to students it is not the matter of deep concern & all.

I feel that argument made in favor of option A is lacking as it does not completely justify it.

I think it should be E because all are implicit. How can you say that the advice is given because of deep concern. The principal is some senior person and its always the duty of the seniors to give advice.
Giving the argument of "deep concern" is like saying that the soldier is saving the country because he is deeply concerned for the country but its both i.e. his duty and may (or may not) be his concern.

Most of the time it is a duty of principal to advice even though students don't like to listen. And how the statement proofs that the students are desired to develop. So according to me none is implicit.
