Logical Reasoning - Statement and Assumption - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Statement and Assumption - Section 5 (Q.No. 10)
Directions to Solve

In each question below is given a statement followed by three assumptions numbered I, II and III. You have to consider the statement and the following assumptions, decide which of the assumptions is implicit in the statement and choose your answer accordingly.

10.

Statement: "I want to present a book on techniques of yoga to Ajay on his birthday."- A tells B.

Assumptions:

  1. A will be invited by Ajay on his birthday.
  2. The person, to whom the book is to be presented, is not keeping good health.
  3. Book is an acceptable gift for birthday.

Only I and II are implicit
Only II and III are implicit
Only I and III are implicit
None is implicit
All are implicit
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Since A has decided to gift a book to Ajay on his birthday, it is quite evident that he will be invited by Ajay and that a book is an acceptable gift. So, both I and III are implicit. Nothing about the state of health of the person can be deduced from the statement. So, II is not implicit.

I think it is part of a test to be an employee and be hired. So if it is a statement by A, assume A is your boss or the owner of the company. Also assume A is honest and does not want to do anything that doesn't make good business sense. Then it is easier to conclude that I. And III. Are true. But II. Does not have to be true because yoga is a wonderful thing and there are many reasons besides ill health why a person might want to enjoy yoga (e.g. He will become better at playing football).

I think the connection between the statement and each of the two conclusions I. And III. Is not exactly logical but more commonsensical. They can be drawn by inference. Inference is weaker than pure deductive logic.

One doesn't need to be invited to present a gift to the birthday boy. In his physical absence, he can still deliver his gift via some other means. Am I right?

Gift is something that is useful so he must be having health issues.

Why not E? Here we are taking about assumptions.
