Logical Reasoning - Statement and Argument - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Statement and Argument - Section 3 (Q.No. 12)
Directions to Solve

Each question given below consists of a statement, followed by three or four arguments numbered I, II, III and IV. You have to decide which of the arguments is/are 'strong' arguments) and which is/are 'weak' arguments) and accordingly choose your answer from the alternatives given below each question.

12.

Statement: Should India acquire/manufacture the latest nuclear weapons?

Arguments:

  1. Yes. The enemies of India are improving their weapons continuously and it becomes imperative to protect the sovereignty and integrity of the country.
  2. No. Instead the money should be diverted to development activities.
  3. No. The international community will isolate Indians and this will bring a setback to Indian economy.
  4. No. It will be against our policy of maintaining world peace.

Only I is strong
Only I and IV are strong
Only I, II and IV are strong
All are strong
None of these
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Clearly, in the blind race for attaining nuclear powers, acquiring nuclear weapons is an inevitability to protect the country from the threat of nuclear powers. So, argument I holds strong. Also, defence of the country is as important as internal development. So, II does not hold. Argument III seems to be vague. Also, India intends to acquire nuclear weapons for self-defence and not aggression. So, argument IV also does not hold.

Strongly disagree as well. This question is has political connotations attached to it. Look at Iran and the way they were isolated from the international community because of the alleged development of nuclear weapons.

Both II and IV has the same purpose of holding peace and in stead of money being spend on weapons these could be used for economical development.

Furthermore, 'enemies' is a very strong word and I do not believe that India has any enemies at this moment. So the chosen answer is wrong and instead all viewpoints should be taken in consideration thus all of the argument are equally strong.

This question is a test of your political views, not your logical reasoning skills. The explanation in the answer contains statements such as "acquiring nuclear weapons is an inevitability to protect the country from the threat of nuclear powers" are not implicit in the question.

Such statements could have been included in the question to turn it into a valid logical test, but it would still have amounted to a piece of propaganda.

I say 1. 2. 3 all three are strong reasons. Since using the money for defence is as important as other things. And talking about blind race to develop nuclear weapons is rubbish but a certain amount of defence should be built up. And if the other countries have modern weapons people of India cannot sit with a revolver in their hands. Development in defence is necessary at any cost. But unplanned rapid development isn't needed!

Sorry I'm not indian, I think this is a nonsense. This test is not valid for people outside India as I think there is a lot of cultural preconception in this solution.

I strongly disagree with the word "inevitability" in the sentence "acquiring nuclear weapons is an inevitability to protect the country from the threat of nuclear powers."

This is NOT a logical reasoning assessment but a reflection of the administer's political opinions.
